Lip-reading with the Obamas

“The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!” — Matthew 6:22-23

“‘Ut imago est animi voltus sic indices oculi’ (The face is a picture of the mind as the eyes are its interpreter)” — Cicero (106-43 B.C.)

A lot is going to be made of the video being talked about today (see below), and about the political interpretation of it, on both sides. As much as I don’t relish the thought of America’s political discourse turning to lip reading analysis, it has to be said that judging by the Obamas’ prior behavior and statements regarding the greatness and exceptional nature of America, this time it warrants a closer look.

I grew up lip reading because my saintly mother has cerebral palsy. To me it looks like Michelle Obama is saying exactly what others think she’s saying…something negative about the flag or the ceremony.

I found a person in the comments section of an AmericanThinker.com post about it who claims to be a lip reader (has two kids who are deaf) and who said that Michelle is saying “What’s that for, that flag?”. But then another person on a separate blog (can’t find it now…sorry), who claims to be a special ed teacher, says it’s “Talk about adding fuel to the fire.” Yet a third person posted that foxnews.com reported her as saying “What a beautiful flag”, but I don’t find any evidence of that on the foxnews.com site.

So, it’s a toss-up, I guess.

Still, the telling eye-roll/blink and the body language of both of them bothers me.  Body language counts for a lot in human communication. I can’t help but consider that the comment was not a benign one.

If nothing can be concluded about what she actually said, and if you’re the sort who still reveres and respects the flag, let us at least agree to the blatant disrespect of making any comments at all during the flag ceremony honoring those slaughtered in the biggest attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor. She could have…should have, at the very least for the sake of the image of the Office of the President…saved her remarks for later–when the cameras weren’t rolling.

Are Americans “paranoid” when Obama’s really out to get us?

Today, at Patterico’s Pontifications, we read:

But then I thought to myself, what more perfect example could there possibly be about why many conservatives get paranoid about Obama? I mean since Obama has become president conservatives have often wondered: is he really this bad at his job, or is he some kind of evil genius trying to intentionally frak up this country?

Now, consider this syllogism.

1. An unpatriotic act is one that unjustifiably harms this country.

2. Obama has declared that adding $4 Trillion to the debt was an unpatriotic act.

3. As President, Obama has added $4 Trillion to the debt.

4. Therefore Obama is knowingly, intentionally, and unjustifiably engaging in conduct that harms this country.

Now, tell the truth liberals, is there anything at all unreasonable about that syllogism? No.

But there is a reason why that syllogism fails, because there is a hidden premise in it. Let’s call it step 2.5 and insert it back into my syllogism:

1. An unpatriotic act is one that unjustifiably harms this country.

2. Obama has declared that adding $4 Trillion to the debt was an unpatriotic act.

2.5 Obama actually means what he said.

3. As President, Obama has added $4 Trillion to the debt.

4. Therefore Obama is knowingly, intentionally, and unjustifiably engaging in conduct that harms this country.

And as far as I can see, that is the only logical defense to the charge that the President is knowingly and willfully harming this country: that he is a cheeseball politician willing to say one thing to be elected and to do another once he actually has power.

But when he behaves this shamelessly and other people conclude that he is harming this country on purpose, he has no one to blame for it but himself. Which, if he was less shameless, he would recognize.

Every time I make this point to a Progressive Statist (and I’ve been doing so for months now) all I get is stunned silence, stammering, then sputtering and rage, followed by a complete change of subject. They cannot answer this logic because they have no facts to back up their own assertions to the contrary. Every time.

From my observations of such conversations over the years, I have come to two conclusions:

  1. True conservatives vote on the basis of logic and reason, mixed with a certain amount emotion across the patriotic spectrum. They eschew voting based on political expediency for the sole purpose of holding onto power. Power is not a means to an end…it is a thing to be kept in check.
  2. Progressive Statists vote on the basis of emotion alone, whether or not the emotion is patriotic or treasonous. They reach for political expediency like a heroin addict reaches for his needle. They hold onto power until their knuckles are bloody and slip into withdrawals when they lose it, promising always to “do better next time” they try to quit the power trip if we’ll just give them another chance, yet always backsliding.
