Bitcoin, light bulbs, and a new financial tyranny

Most Americans, if they know the answer to the question “who invented the light bulb” at all, believe that it was Thomas Edison. But did you know there is some evidence to indicate that Thomas Edison originated the idea of an alternative currency exchange like Bitcoin?

That bit about the light bulb is not quite true. At least not in the way most of us have learned it in grade school. At the time of Edison’s invention, several people were working on developing a light bulb. What Edison invented, in addition to his version of the light bulb, was the network infrastructure (i.e. the ecosystem) to support the light bulb.

Edison had to arrange for coal barges to deliver coal from the mines in Pennsylvania to his new electrical generator which he built in NY City, string the wires to the business and homes of his subscribers, wire those business and homes and install the light bulbs. In addition, he had to develop metering and billing systems to charge his customers for the new service. Still, Edison’s unique mix of drive, ingenuity, and grit put him in a position to do this when few others could have pulled it off.

What has become painfully obvious in the past several weeks is that while Bitcoin (i.e. the latest “light bulb”) works, the supporting infrastructure (i.e. the ecosystem) doesn’t work. This is due to serious security issues which were never identified and/or addressed at its inception.

In the newest revelations pertaining to Bitcoin, and even going back to December 2013, we find some news reports that JPMorgan has been filing patent applications to gain control of a Bitcoin-like technology and the supporting ecosystem. Below are some news reports, links and two very recent patent applications by JPMorgan.

One of the standard tricks of the Capital City Ruling Class is to take a computer-generated document and render it as a non-searchable graphic in a PDF. The two attached PDFs from the US Patent Office have been OCR scanned to restore text searching.

Just as the Internet can be the greatest force for the liberation of humanity in the past ten thousand years, in the hands of a group like the NSA it can be the instrument of our enslavement. Likewise, Bitcoin, which has the potential of liberating financial transactions from the tyranny of government control, in the hands of a willing government proxy such as JPMorgan would give the government total control of the economy.

What is not yet apparent in any declaration is whether the Bitcoin technology is in the public Domain. GNU is happy to accept donations in Bitcode but there doesn’t appear to be any deceleration as to its status in GNU.

Bottom line: The Bitcoin Foundation had better start declaring all the technology in the public domain or plan to start paying very high royalties to JPMorgan.

Also included below is a report from Think Progress pertaining to the evils of Bitcoin, which is historically funny. It looks like Think Progress and JPMorgan may have found a common cause.

Operation “Choke Point”: Obama’s Weaponization of Government

Banks are taking punitive actions against the firearms industry. This is part of a broader initiative to control Americans through the Federal Reserve, which is accountable to no one.

Obama’s Weaponization of Government

“According to the Administration, those industries interestingly include ammunition salesgun sales, home-based charities, gambling, pharmaceutical sales, short-term loans, raffles, Amway and Mary Kay-style sales businesses, and credit repair services.”

“Then there’s the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, once headed by Elizabeth Warren, also now a key cog in the Obama Administration’s effort to regulate industries and personal decision-making.   The CPFB is rapidly becoming, next to the Justice Department, the Administration’s agency of choice for extending the reach of government into our daily lives and stretching the limits of the law.  Unfortunately for Americans, this little-known agency is housed as part of the Federal Reserve so it exists outside of the direct pervue of Congress.  How convenient for the President.”

Justice Department Inquiry Takes Aim at Banks’ Business With Payday Lenders

The Left is focusing on payday lenders and is ignoring everything else.

“In the new initiative, called “Operation Choke Point,” the agency is scrutinizing banks both big and small over whether they, in exchange for handsome fees, enable businesses to illegally siphon billions of dollars from consumers’ checking accounts, according to state and federal officials briefed on the investigation.”

On January 7, 2013 the following news report appeared, which I thought was strange at the time:

The Mother of All Computer Security Problems Will Be North Korea. Think EMP.

Nuclear north korea

Nuclear north korea (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The talk radio circuit did something today that I never thought they’d do. Usually, even conservative talk radio eschews talking about things they deem “extreme” such as Doomsday Prepper type scenarios (unless they’re making fun). But with new tensions between the US and North Korea in the last year, and especially in the last few days, they’re now seriously talking about an EMP event being likely in the near future.

The host on early this morning in Chicago, Big John Howell, is a self-described moderate who regularly makes fun of preppers and other “extreme right-wingers” for concocting weird survivalist scenarios to scare people. Today, he had as a guest a former Pentagon official, Michael Maloof, to talk about what was going on with recent NK developments.

Maloof is a Pentagon veteran who made a career of attempting to suppress the trade in high-tech goods with military uses. He was awarded the Defense Department’s Distinguished Civilian Service Award, then thrown under the bus by Pentagon brass for daring to pursue links between Al Qaeda and Iraq.

On the show, Maloof went into how US officials are tracking NK’s latest launch of a “package” into orbit that could be a miniaturized nuke meant to trigger an EMP. Instead of being his skeptical self, the host was “all in” citing his recent reading of the book “One Second After“. I read part of it a few years ago.

The book’s scenario from when it was published in 2009 is eerily playing itself out now, with Iran seemingly fighting (another) proxy war against the West by giving aid to and partnering with a rogue country that has a demonstrated nuclear capability ahead of Iran’s own. All of what NK has for its nuclear capabilities originated with A.Q Khan, the Pakistani scientist who stole NATO nuclear secrets in the 70s and single-handedly gave Pakistan its nuclear program in the late 90s.

Here’s an article I saw getting a lot of play on Twitter last night.

Also, see “Iran: 2013 Will Be Fall of American Empire“.

As I write this, the US is sending warships to the region to send a message to Kim Jong Un but it appears this might be too little, too late as NK seems to have committed itself to some course of drastic action. It has stopped listening to China’s warnings to back down (the Chinese don’t want the refugees, nor the loss of all those Walmart stores in America). Jong Un has just closed one of the rare instances of diplomacy between NK and SK by blocking access to a major manufacturing facility it had allowed SK to build across the border in NK territory.

I hope you buy a shortwave radio and that you build a Faraday cage to house it. Last night I bought a ton of batteries on sale at Radio Shack as well as a multimeter. People who can fix electronics, have an inventory of batteries, and can communicate with the outside world will be in high demand when this all goes down.

Mormonism and American Exceptionalism

As a follow-up to “Why Mormons Make the Best Presidents”, here is my take on why Mormonism and American Exceptionalism go hand-in-hand.

First, you have to understand that Mormons get their name from a man they consider a prophet of God. The man—named Mormon, of course—lived on the American continent between A.D. 321 and A.D. 385. He was the editor and compiler of the ancient scriptural record called “The Book of Mormon”, which he put together as a spiritual record of his fallen people who were destroyed in a bloody internecine war.

And, he did wrote it as a prophetic warning to us for exactly this time in our history. He saw our day in a vision from God and compiled the book according to what he observed in the vision. This book is written for us and we would all do well to read it at least once.

Throughout the Book of Mormon you will find many mentions of how America is an exceptional and special place. The book tells us that it was hidden from the rest of the world as a “promised land” that could only be possessed by those who served “the God of the land”, which is Jesus Christ. The righteous could live there indefinitely while the wicked would be “swept off the face of the land”. It was to be a place of freedom and liberty to those who accept Christ and keep God’s commandments.

Centrally, the record focuses on the visit by the resurrected Christ to “other sheep” whom he said to those in Jerusalem “are not of this fold”. Christ’s appearance to those people resulted in their passing along the experience to their descendants with such conviction that they could not help but have 200 years of peace in that part of the land.

Mormons believe this record is true, even if others do not. It gives us great hope when personal storms arise, or when national tempests, such as this election, threaten to destroy everything. We believe God’s promises to the inhabitants of this land, that if the majority of its inhabitants are faithful and believe in God, they will be free.

So, quite naturally, we Mormons get a little excited when, during the most defining moment in our nation’s history, where we are on the precipice of choosing socialism’s slavery or Constitutional freedom, one of our own, Mitt Romney, is so close to being elected as the President of the United States of America.  We don’t believe Romney is anything more than a man, with liabilities like anyone else might have (and in spite of the disputable, non-doctrinal LDS “White Horse Prophecy”). But, we do have hope that what he was taught in his home and in church settings about this blessed land will have an influence on his term(s) in office, should he be elected.

You see, this election comes down to the answer to a single question: Is America exceptional, or should it be brought down to the level of other nations in the world?

Our current president is on the record as stating that he only believes America is exceptional in the sense that Greeks believe that Greece is exceptional or that the British believe that Britain is exceptional. He finished that thought by saying that “in order for us to work collectively, all parties have to compromise and that includes us.”

The present occupant of the White House believes that America needs to compromise its values and principles to conform to the notions of governance that other nations adhere to. This presumably (because of his choice of the word “collectively”) includes implementing, under pressure or threat by other nations, principles of Socialism and Communism into the American experiment.

Mormons don’t vote in a bloc. Believe it or not, we’re not all white Republicans and we don’t all vote straight ticket conservative. There are Mormons who subscribe to the Democrat party platform, the Libertarian party, the Constitution party, and just about every other type of party. There are even Mormons who subscribe to the principles of the Communist party (however misguided that association might be). The Church is politically neutral, allows its members to vote privately for whomever the individual wishes, and does not discipline or excommunicate people on the basis of their political beliefs.

However, it is undeniable that the majority of American Mormons do vote in line with conservative principles (if not always on party lines). That is because, by and large, the principles found in their scriptures and revealed doctrines are overwhelmingly conservative in contrast to the increasingly permissive and “progressive” worldview promulgated by American popular culture.

As might be expected of a church that was founded in America, Mormons believe strongly in the First Amendment guarantee to worship freely.

We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.

In our meetings, whenever the subject of discussion is what we call “free agency” (the unalienable right of every person to choose his own path in life), we often reflect with gratitude on the blessings of liberty granted to us under the Constitution. We remark on the many miracles that accompanied the founding of this nation and we marvel at how undeniably God’s Hand was in all of it.

When we pray, we thank God that we live in a country and political system where we are (still) free to worship and establish Christ’s Kingdom. We pray for our troops, who protect us, and we pray that our leaders, from the local to the federal level, will be inspired with wisdom and righteousness so that the country can prosper.

We pray this way because we take seriously the warnings left to us in the Book of Mormon. Here is the summarized list of those warnings.

  • We are to watch our leaders for their participation in “secret combinations” (lies, frauds, and conspiracies) and not let such things “get above” us or escape our notice. Apathy is the enemy of freedom.
  • We are to defend our lands, our families, and our freedom to worship, and to prioritize personal and national sovereignty and its defense so as to avoid physical slavery at the hands of those seeking power over mankind.
  • We are to avoid contentions and internal strife so that we will not be weak upon enemy attack. We are to be united in righteousness.

Because these concepts are threaded throughout the entire book, thus making it particularly difficult to adequately call out properly contextualized examples, and because it is partially my goal to encourage more people to read this uniquely pro-American book of scripture, I will leave it as an exercise to the reader to find these treasures of wisdom. You can start here with the story of a family who, seeking to escape societal collapse and Babylonian captivity, fled Jerusalem near 600 B.C. and were led to America’s promised lands.

In closing, I leave you with the following video montage to help encapsulate the concept of “free agency” as it is understood by Mormons.

Are these not the very principles upon which America was founded? Is not American exceptionalism, at its root, a belief that rights come from God, and not from government? Is that not worth fighting for with every vote and with every conversation we have between now and Election Day?

Is the American Psyche a Neurotic Mess?

Is the American Psyche a Neurotic Mess?

No. The price of freedom is vigilance.

If we have to single out some individuals based on a profile that fits the description of the primary perpetrator, that is radical Islam, then that is what we must do.

It is no longer true that we have the best healthcare, the best education, and the best freedoms in the world.  The statistics are quite clear on these points.

Really? We don’t have the best healthcare? Excuse my “neurosis”, but exactly what “statistics” are being used to make this claim?

I may be an ignorant, neurotic hick, but I’ve been around the world enough to know that America is the only country in which I don’t have to wait more than a few days for a doctor appointment. Willy Wonka on the Keynesians and Global Warming Alarmists

There’s no earthly way of knowing
Which direction they are going
There’s no knowing where they’re rowing
Or which way the river’s flowing

Is it raining, is it snowing?
Is a hurricane a-blowing?
Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing

Are the fires of Hell a-glowing?

Is the grisly Reaper mowing?
Yes! The danger must be growing
‘Cause the rowers keep on rowing

So, how’s that global warming working out for you?

Based on NASA/GISS data going back to 1880:

  • The trend of annual mean temperatures since 1880 is warming of 0.59 degrees Celsius per century.
  • The trend over the last nine years (since 2002) is one of cooling.
  • There has been no statistically significant (at 95% confidence level) warming in 14 years (since 1997).
  • The trend in March temperatures for the last 12 years (since 2000) is one of cooling.
  • There has been no statistically significant warming in March for 17 years (since 1995).
  • March 2012 was the coolest March in 13 years (since 1999).

Similar observations can be drawn from Hadley Center data from the U.K., which goes back to 1850.

  • The trend of annual mean temperatures since 1850 is warming of 0.45 deg. C per century.
  • The trend over the last 13 years (since 1998) is one of cooling.
  • There has been no statistically significant warming in 16 years (since 1995).

In short, both temperature data sets (NASA and Hadley Center) show

  1. Minimal global warming over the last 130 to 160 years: about half a deg. C per century.
  2. No statistically significant global warming in the last 14 to 17 years.
  3. Global cooling in the last 9 to 13 years.

Taxing castles to redistribute sand…

Where the money comes from is beside the point to big-government Keynesians, who look out across the economic landscape and dream of smoothing out the sands.  They’re smart and know “real things” — so when their stimulus policies fail, they blame ambition and greed because, no matter how much monetary sand they add, they can’t control what beachgoers do with it.  Some dig holes, some build castles, but 99% of us spread it around more or less evenly.  This election year, we’re told, 1% hoard sand, doing the equivalent of hiding cash under their mattresses.  How un-American, according to Professor Obama, who told the United Auto Workers in February, “America’s not just looking out for yourself, it’s not just about greed, it’s not just about trying to climb to the very top and keep everybody else down.”

A Tale of Two Mothers

Or, “Liberals have no qualms about turning your mother into a political football”

Last night, my inbox showed I had two messages about Mother’s Day.

Time to put on your Politicized B.S. detector. Hint: only one of these is full of Politicized B.S.

Contrast that slick piece of navel gazing political marketing and pandering with the simple, heartfelt, and sincere message Ann Romney sent out.

I think the distinction is rather obvious. Michelle Obama, The First Mother, if you will indulge that as an extension of her official title, isn’t even mentioned in the White House email. Nope. It’s all about the administration’s socialist agenda and how mothers simply won’t be able to get along without the government.

The administration’s imagery is likewise disturbing. While I get that there’s a “military moms” angle to the message (again, as thinly veiled political pandering), wouldn’t that message be more convincing if there were, oh, I don’t know, an AMERICAN FLAG SOMEWHERE IN THE IMAGERY????????????

Instead, we get sugar-coated, post-modern socialist pabulum echoes of this:

Which do you prefer? Sending a Mother’s Day card laden with political overtones from New Motherland Amerika (and an administration at war with motherhood, which is much more than a “choice”)? Or an invitation to let your mother know she’s one of the most important people in your life?
