The Mother of All Computer Security Problems Will Be North Korea. Think EMP.

Nuclear north korea

The talk radio circuit did something today that I never thought they’d do. Usually, even conservative talk radio eschews talking about things they deem “extreme” such as Doomsday Prepper type scenarios (unless they’re making fun). But with new tensions between the US and North Korea in the last year, and especially in the last few days, they’re now seriously talking about an EMP event being likely in the near future.

The host on early this morning in Chicago, Big John Howell, is a self-described moderate who regularly makes fun of preppers and other “extreme right-wingers” for concocting weird survivalist scenarios to scare people. Today, he had as a guest a former Pentagon official, Michael Maloof, to talk about what was going on with recent NK developments.

Maloof is a Pentagon veteran who made a career of attempting to suppress the trade in high-tech goods with military uses. He was awarded the Defense Department’s Distinguished Civilian Service Award, then thrown under the bus by Pentagon brass for daring to pursue links between Al Qaeda and Iraq.

On the show, Maloof went into how US officials are tracking NK’s latest launch of a “package” into orbit that could be a miniaturized nuke meant to trigger an EMP. Instead of being his skeptical self, the host was “all in” citing his recent reading of the book “One Second After“. I read part of it a few years ago.

The book’s scenario from when it was published in 2009 is eerily playing itself out now, with Iran seemingly fighting (another) proxy war against the West by giving aid to and partnering with a rogue country that has a demonstrated nuclear capability ahead of Iran’s own. All of what NK has for its nuclear capabilities originated with A.Q Khan, the Pakistani scientist who stole NATO nuclear secrets in the 70s and single-handedly gave Pakistan its nuclear program in the late 90s.

Here’s an article I saw getting a lot of play on Twitter last night.

Also, see “Iran: 2013 Will Be Fall of American Empire“.

As I write this, the US is sending warships to the region to send a message to Kim Jong Un but it appears this might be too little, too late as NK seems to have committed itself to some course of drastic action. It has stopped listening to China’s warnings to back down (the Chinese don’t want the refugees, nor the loss of all those Walmart stores in America). Jong Un has just closed one of the rare instances of diplomacy between NK and SK by blocking access to a major manufacturing facility it had allowed SK to build across the border in NK territory.

I hope you buy a shortwave radio and that you build a Faraday cage to house it. Last night I bought a ton of batteries on sale at Radio Shack as well as a multimeter. People who can fix electronics, have an inventory of batteries, and can communicate with the outside world will be in high demand when this all goes down.

Open Letter to BulldogReporter.com Publishers and Editors

To BulldogReporter.com editors:

I’ve unsubscribed from Bulldog Reporter after 3 years of being a loyal fan of your publication.

I work in the PR profession, but I am also a patriot and cannot abide further erosion of 2nd Amendment protections. Your skewed article maligning the NRA and blaming it for violence in our society was what ended my relationship with your site. Blaming the NRA for Sandy Hook is like blaming AAA for drunk drivers. Furthermore, the video you cited was showing military firearms not available to the general public, once again showing your ignorance about the distinction between fully automatic and semi-automatic weaponry.

Your other skewed article helping to dictate to the free market what toys are and aren’t acceptable to make and sell was just as disingenuous. The hypocrisy lies in the Hollywood elite, who direct and act in films that glorify violence and drive the sales of video games, and who then decry the NRA as being the cause (not a contributor, but the cause) of the Sandy Hook and Aurora incidents.

For example, James Holmes cited his love of the Joker character who was characterized as just wanting to see the world burn. Adam Lanza was into movies and video games that filled his disturbed mind with scenes of bloodshed and killing. The ideas pouring into the minds of children and young adults originates in Hollywood, and everything else flows from that. Put pressure on Hollywood to purify the source of the river and you’ll clean up its banks.

You and others in the mass media are counter-productively trying to destroy the one right that protects your right to say these things. A government which does not fear the people because of the 2nd Amendment will quickly run roughshod over the 1st Amendment.

But it looks like you’re okay with helping the Obama administration dismantle the Constitution. I’ll leave you to that. See how that works out for you. Meanwhile, I will do my best to dismantle your readership by calling for a boycott of Bulldog Reporter.

Mormonism and American Exceptionalism

As a follow-up to “Why Mormons Make the Best Presidents”, here is my take on why Mormonism and American Exceptionalism go hand-in-hand.

First, you have to understand that Mormons get their name from a man they consider a prophet of God. The man—named Mormon, of course—lived on the American continent between A.D. 321 and A.D. 385. He was the editor and compiler of the ancient scriptural record called “The Book of Mormon”, which he put together as a spiritual record of his fallen people who were destroyed in a bloody internecine war.

And, he did wrote it as a prophetic warning to us for exactly this time in our history. He saw our day in a vision from God and compiled the book according to what he observed in the vision. This book is written for us and we would all do well to read it at least once.

Throughout the Book of Mormon you will find many mentions of how America is an exceptional and special place. The book tells us that it was hidden from the rest of the world as a “promised land” that could only be possessed by those who served “the God of the land”, which is Jesus Christ. The righteous could live there indefinitely while the wicked would be “swept off the face of the land”. It was to be a place of freedom and liberty to those who accept Christ and keep God’s commandments.

Centrally, the record focuses on the visit by the resurrected Christ to “other sheep” whom he said to those in Jerusalem “are not of this fold”. Christ’s appearance to those people resulted in their passing along the experience to their descendants with such conviction that they could not help but have 200 years of peace in that part of the land.

Mormons believe this record is true, even if others do not. It gives us great hope when personal storms arise, or when national tempests, such as this election, threaten to destroy everything. We believe God’s promises to the inhabitants of this land, that if the majority of its inhabitants are faithful and believe in God, they will be free.

So, quite naturally, we Mormons get a little excited when, during the most defining moment in our nation’s history, where we are on the precipice of choosing socialism’s slavery or Constitutional freedom, one of our own, Mitt Romney, is so close to being elected as the President of the United States of America.  We don’t believe Romney is anything more than a man, with liabilities like anyone else might have (and in spite of the disputable, non-doctrinal LDS “White Horse Prophecy”). But, we do have hope that what he was taught in his home and in church settings about this blessed land will have an influence on his term(s) in office, should he be elected.

You see, this election comes down to the answer to a single question: Is America exceptional, or should it be brought down to the level of other nations in the world?

Our current president is on the record as stating that he only believes America is exceptional in the sense that Greeks believe that Greece is exceptional or that the British believe that Britain is exceptional. He finished that thought by saying that “in order for us to work collectively, all parties have to compromise and that includes us.”

The present occupant of the White House believes that America needs to compromise its values and principles to conform to the notions of governance that other nations adhere to. This presumably (because of his choice of the word “collectively”) includes implementing, under pressure or threat by other nations, principles of Socialism and Communism into the American experiment.

Mormons don’t vote in a bloc. Believe it or not, we’re not all white Republicans and we don’t all vote straight ticket conservative. There are Mormons who subscribe to the Democrat party platform, the Libertarian party, the Constitution party, and just about every other type of party. There are even Mormons who subscribe to the principles of the Communist party (however misguided that association might be). The Church is politically neutral, allows its members to vote privately for whomever the individual wishes, and does not discipline or excommunicate people on the basis of their political beliefs.

However, it is undeniable that the majority of American Mormons do vote in line with conservative principles (if not always on party lines). That is because, by and large, the principles found in their scriptures and revealed doctrines are overwhelmingly conservative in contrast to the increasingly permissive and “progressive” worldview promulgated by American popular culture.

As might be expected of a church that was founded in America, Mormons believe strongly in the First Amendment guarantee to worship freely.

We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.

In our meetings, whenever the subject of discussion is what we call “free agency” (the unalienable right of every person to choose his own path in life), we often reflect with gratitude on the blessings of liberty granted to us under the Constitution. We remark on the many miracles that accompanied the founding of this nation and we marvel at how undeniably God’s Hand was in all of it.

When we pray, we thank God that we live in a country and political system where we are (still) free to worship and establish Christ’s Kingdom. We pray for our troops, who protect us, and we pray that our leaders, from the local to the federal level, will be inspired with wisdom and righteousness so that the country can prosper.

We pray this way because we take seriously the warnings left to us in the Book of Mormon. Here is the summarized list of those warnings.

  • We are to watch our leaders for their participation in “secret combinations” (lies, frauds, and conspiracies) and not let such things “get above” us or escape our notice. Apathy is the enemy of freedom.
  • We are to defend our lands, our families, and our freedom to worship, and to prioritize personal and national sovereignty and its defense so as to avoid physical slavery at the hands of those seeking power over mankind.
  • We are to avoid contentions and internal strife so that we will not be weak upon enemy attack. We are to be united in righteousness.

Because these concepts are threaded throughout the entire book, thus making it particularly difficult to adequately call out properly contextualized examples, and because it is partially my goal to encourage more people to read this uniquely pro-American book of scripture, I will leave it as an exercise to the reader to find these treasures of wisdom. You can start here with the story of a family who, seeking to escape societal collapse and Babylonian captivity, fled Jerusalem near 600 B.C. and were led to America’s promised lands.

In closing, I leave you with the following video montage to help encapsulate the concept of “free agency” as it is understood by Mormons.

Are these not the very principles upon which America was founded? Is not American exceptionalism, at its root, a belief that rights come from God, and not from government? Is that not worth fighting for with every vote and with every conversation we have between now and Election Day?

Any questions? Just ask me in the comments, or on Twitter @proud2b4family.

Please think about what you’ve read here as you cast your ballot on Tuesday.

Why Mormons Make the Best Presidents

Below are my thoughts concerning Mitt Romney as President of the United States. These are my own opinions and statements and are in no way official statements from my employer (thank goodness I still have one), the Romney campaign (which I don’t work for) or the LDS Church (which I belong to).

I woke up the other morning and found out that pastor Bill Keller is claiming that nearly 1.4 million Christians are writing in Jesus on their ballot.

I’m absolutely committed to the ideal of Jesus Christ being our leader. He is 100% + infinity the MOST qualified to lead us. But, He will never force His will on us.  We have to choose Him. Christ’s leadership of us doesn’t have anything to do with marking a bubble on a ballot. Keller’s insistence that Christians place Jesus as their write-in during the most important election in world history is a cynical, self-serving, and self-promotional publicity stunt. I’m sure he has a book in the works for when the initiative fails. It will sell tens and tens of copies.

From a Mormon perspective, there’s no use arguing with Mr. Keller’s tedious repetition of long-refuted anti-Mormon demagoguery in justifying his bigotry against members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There’s literally “nothing to it”.

Instead, because there are still too many people wondering if a Mormon can be a good president, I want to highlight why Mitt Romney—and indeed many faithful Mormons, male and female—would be the best president.

First, let’s focus on the word “President”. It’s an understatement to say that it’s a term that pervades Mormon vocabulary. The terms “presidents” and “presidency” are absolutely infused into its culture.

We have a prophet whom we address as “President”, along with his two counselors. There is a Presiding Bishopric. There are several presidents of quorums of seventy, of areas, of “stakes” (similar to a diocese), bishops of large congregations or “wards”, and presidents of small congregations or “branches”.

There are male and female presidents of ward quorums and relief societies. There are presidents of young men and young women’s groups. The Mormon Church is simply overflowing with presidents and presidencies. It’s how we roll.

“So what,” one may ask. “Anybody can call himself ‘president’ if they want. How does this prove Romney is presidential material?”

Mormon Ecclesiastical Presidents Personify the Founders’ Definition of Public Virtue

“President” in the Mormon church is more than just a title. In the case of prophets, bishops, and stake presidents, the title “president” is accompanied with a heavy dose of massive responsibility for a lot of people, and often, despite anti-Mormon armchair fiscal analysis, with limited, consecrated resources. And, this work is 100% voluntary in addition to the person’s vocation.

Men and women are called to presidencies whether they are corporate CEOs or middle school janitors or unemployed. They are not selected on the basis of their wealth, societal status, intellect, organizational skills, or innate leadership capabilities. Mormons believe their leaders are chosen by God, through 100% inspiration, via prayers of and revelation to other leaders. They are formally called in a public congregation setting, set apart (consecrated), and sustained voluntarily and, 99.9% of the time, unanimously by the congregations they serve.

Bishops and Stake Presidents bear the awesome task of caring for the physical welfare and spiritual needs of between 300-500 and 3,000-5,000 church members, respectively. They do so with the help of two counselors, a clerk, a secretary, and presidencies of auxiliary organizations at all levels and among all facets of church life:  a “presidential cabinet”, if you will.

It’s literally a second full-time job. But for those who serve in public office and work and serve in ecclesiastical positions, they are literally serving at 3 times the capacity of the average American.

And they do it without pay.

The term “public virtue”—as it was used in the era in which the Foundering Fathers built the structure of our nation—means to serve without regard to remuneration or one’s own wants and needs. It was to sacrifice everything to the noble service of the public good and one’s country. The Founders’ practice of public virtue is a shining light on a hill for all of us to look to, and a candlestick to pass along to each generation behind us.

Some may still not be convinced that being called a president in one’s church equates to being capable of being President of the Free World. In theory, that is a reasonable objection. In practice it is not. Though it would seem to some that theory and practice in that last sentence ought to switch places, Mormon presidents quickly find out that local groups of people are every bit as human and, at times, as difficult and as stubborn as people in the world writ large.

How Mormons Produce So Many “Natural” Leaders

You must understand that Mitt Romney didn’t arrive at his leadership excellence by accident, by caste, or by mere virtue of genetic inheritance. As he stated in his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, his mother and father started out poor and pulled themselves up by their bootstraps, with the grace of God as the wind in their sails.

In the Mormon church, leadership is taught from day one…through example. Fathers and mothers are taught, and are expected to teach, their children with love and respect. They work to correct them early, often and with loving compassion when they make mistakes. Children are taught to honor and respect their parents as their natural leaders in the family unit, which Mormons consider the bedrock of society. Mitt had both a loving father and mother, both truly devoted to each other, and he and his wife, Ann, have passed along those traits to their five boys through teaching by example.

Children, through their “Primary” (children’s Sunday School) years, learn songs and scriptures that are brimming with examples of Christ’s leadership as well as leadership of Biblical, Book of Mormon, and latter-day prophets. They hear histories of pioneers who made a barren desert valley bloom, where nobody thought anything could grow, under the leadership of the near-legendary, but very real Brigham Young.

At the age of twelve, their leadership training becomes “hands-on” as the young men are given position of authority and responsibility as Deacons, Teachers, and Priests and the young women take charge of their own personal development and activity programs to prepare them for motherhood, careers, or both if they choose.

Missionary work also plays a critical role in developing leadership, diplomacy, and intercultural communication skills. Mitt Romney served in France, where he undoubtedly learned how to manage cultural differences to get along with a series of companions and multiple individuals he taught and served.

Members are “called” to specific roles and responsibilities (known as ministry in other denominations). It’s a process of daily thought and prayer by, and revelation to, other senior leaders in the Church. Mitt participated in extending callings to numerous individuals based on “perspiration and inspiration”, and not desperation or expediency, resulting in voluntarily unanimous decision-making among he and his “cabinet”.

Does Mitt Intend to Rule the United States of America as a Theocracy?

Absolutely not. Church doctrine actually forbids even the prophet to attempt to establish a theocracy. That is because we believe that only Jesus Christ will ultimately establish His Kingdom on the earth and that such will conclude when he appears again at His Second Coming. We don’t claim to know when that will be but we try to live and prepare as though it will be tomorrow—even though it could be another century or more away.

And, rumors that the LDS Church will somehow seek to directly influence a Romney presidency are just that…rumors. The Church continues to boldly and publicly proclaim that it has no intention to do so. The Church news website asserts, “This is especially ironic considering the partisan political neutrality of the Church, which does not endorse candidates or party platforms, does not put out voter guides and has some of the strictest rules of any church in America in forbidding use of its buildings and membership rolls for political purposes.”

Mitt Romney Knows Welfare

The LDS Church welfare system is well-regarded worldwide for its sustainability, efficiency, economy, and ability to put people back on their feet with dignity. That’s because it is a hand up, not a handout. It is a means of sustaining life, not maintaining a lifestyle. Its main product is not dependency, but honest, productive, useful work.

Anyone who wishes to engage with the Church to receive welfare “benefits” must work for them in whatever way they can. Those who are not able bodied enough to work for their welfare are accommodated as well.

Some recipients are asked to fill No. 10 cans with dry goods and pack them into boxes for shipment to areas of great need. Others repair used clothing. Yet others offer skills from their prior vocational training to repair vehicles, help with child care, and even train other workers. In short, nobody receives Church welfare without lifting a finger to carry his load. “We all have work, let no one shirk. Put your shoulder to the wheel,” as a favorite Mormon hymn states. (Though, my kids like to insert “don’t be a jerk” whenever we sing it.)

Now, I don’t know just what Mitt Romney has planned for welfare. But imagine if Mitt Romney looked to the Church welfare model he has already administered many times as a Bishop as a new model for American welfare systems. EBT cards (nee “food stamps”) would probably still exist. Nobody would lose benefits they’re receiving, other than free phones and get-out-of-jail-free-cards on the taxpayer dime. And the only dependency left in the welfare system would be that you only get benefits depending on your level of effort. No effort, no benefits.

Mitt’s Church Leadership and Foreign Policy

Mitt Romney is part of a worldwide church that just happens to have started in America. In fact, there are more Mormons outside of the United States than in, and it’s been that way for quite a while. Mitt is used to thinking about the global picture as he helps people locally. His donations to charity have included many worthy global charities that have made a lot of difference for real people. Mitt can see through the veneer of national borders and recognize that human beings all have basic needs that must be met before they can fully participate in their own self-actualization.

Romney seems at this stage to reject the tyranny of U.N. dictates and the foolishness of sending money as “foreign aid” to our enemies to curry favor. He understands that there are corrupt individuals in the world who would use our generosity against us. I’m absolutely sure that he will seek out those instances of counterproductive aid and root them out for good.

Yet he is also wise enough to recognize a diplomatic relationship-building opportunity through disaster relief. Again, the LDS Church’s world-renowned aid system could serve as a model.

Mitt is also fiercely loyal to our military, many of whose soldiers are also Church members. He would not have let the Benghazi situation get so out of control and ultimately cost us the life of four Americans. Mitt personally knew one of the Navy SEALs.

How Mitt’s Presidential Attributes Help You

Throughout his years as a Mormon bishop (i.e. pastor), Mitt spent hours counseling families who were on the edge of financial ruin. He taught them self-reliant principles of provident living that helped many get out of debt and get back on their feet again.

The Mormon Church has imbued Mitt Romney with a penchant for selfless service. There are many examples of Mitt Romney giving of his time and substantial financial resources that have only recently come to light. From looking for a lost child to stopping spontaneously to help a stranger remove a tree stump from his yard, Romney’s record on helping “the average Joe” is unassailable and in sharp contrast with almost any politico in the beltway.

Because Romney is too humble of a gentleman to tout this service, I will quote, at length, Newsday’s article to do it for him. Again, this is probably only the tip of the mountain of good things the man has done for others.

– After Joey O’Donnell, 12, died of cystic fibrosis in 1986, Romney built a playground in his honor. “There he was, with a hammer in his belt, the Mitt nobody sees,” the boy’s father and Romney’s neighbor, Joseph O’Donnell, told Michael Kranish and Scott Helman, authors of “The Real Romney,” a biography of the candidate. A year later, Joey’s Park needed maintenance. “My wife calls me up and says, ‘You’re not going to believe this, but Mitt Romney is down with a bunch of Boy Scouts and they’re working on the park.’ … He did it for like the next five years, without ever calling to say, ‘We’re doing this,’ without a reporter in tow, not looking for any credit.” — In 1995, Romney heard about the Nixons, a family who moved to Boston. A car wreck soon left their sons paraplegic. Romney called and asked if they were available on Christmas Eve. Romney, his wife, and sons arrived with a stereo and other gifts for the crippled boys. Romney offered to put them through college and supported them through numerous fundraisers. As their father told Kranish and Helman, “It wasn’t a one-time thing.” Beyond generosity, Romney has demonstrated organizational leadership and personal courage while aiding others.

– Melissa Gay, Bain Capital partner Robert Gay’s daughter, vanished while visiting New York City in July 1996. Then-CEO Romney closed Bain’s Boston headquarters and jetted to Gotham to find the 14-year-old. Romney flew in his 50 employees and transformed a Marriott Hotel into a command post. He consulted the New York police department and recruited private investigators. He dispatched staffers to enlist Bain’s colleagues. Bain’s printer, R.R. Donnelly, produced 300,000 missing-person fliers.

Bain’s CPAs at Price Waterhouse placed the handbills all over town. Duane Reade, a Bain portfolio company, stuck leaflets in shopping bags at 52 local outlets.

Five days after Melissa disappeared, someone rang Bain’s tip line to ask about a reward. The New York Police Department traced the call to a New Jersey home, where a 17-year-old had hidden the disoriented and drugged child, unbeknown to his parents.

Romney’s focus and management saved Melissa. She now is a happily married mother who teaches fourth grade.

– A home once burst into flames near Romney’s residence. Kranish and Helman report that Romney “organized the gathered neighbors, and they began dashing into the house to rescue what they could: a desk, couches, books” until firefighters arrived.

– The Romneys were vacationing in New Hampshire in 2003 when screams shook the Independence Day air. Some 900 feet from them, New Jersey‘s Morrisey family and their leaky boat were sinking into Lake Winnipesaukee.

Romney’s sons Craig and Josh sped into the lake on a Jet Ski. “We tore out of there, and my dad hopped on the other Jet Ski and came out right after us,” Josh told the Boston Herald.

They found three men and three women bobbing in the water in barely buckled life vests. Massachusetts’ then-governor pulled the two younger women onto his three-seat Jet Ski, while his sons assisted their mother. They then whisked these women safely to shore, along with McKenzie, their Scottish Terrier. Meanwhile, the three men treaded water under the sons’ watchful eyes until Mitt made two more trips to rush them to dry land.

Previously, while spearheading the 2002 Olympics, Romney and his sons used a boat to rescue several kayakers when high winds slammed them onto rocks.

As well, a family the Romneys sold their Utah home to were stunned when Mitt personally took time to teach them about the home’s systems and quirks before handing over the keys.

Who does that? Mitt Romney does that.

That’s the kind of man you will get with Mitt Romney as president: a man who sees a problem or need and executes a plan to fix it.

In my next article, I’ll cover some of the philosophies of Mormonism that connect quite readily with American exceptionalism, and how a Romney presidency would start from that context to rebuild a torn nation while preserving its fundamental freedoms.

Secrecy in the Boy Scouts? Meh.

Here it comes. Yet another email from Change.org pleading the case of gays who want to completely rework the Boy Scouts of America, a private organization with private membership and private donors, operating completely under the protections of the First Amendment and a year 2000 court ruling upholding the same.

Oh, but the folks at Change.org don’t let a little thing like court rulings on Constitutionality bother them (unless it’s not working for their side).

Ok, Change.org-ies, let’s spell it out nice and clear. Starting with a layman’s common understanding as is found on Wikipedia.

Although it is not explicitly protected in the First Amendment, the Supreme Court ruled, in NAACP v. Alabama, 357 U.S. 449 (1958), freedom of association to be a fundamental right protected by it. In Roberts v. United States Jaycees, 468 U.S. 609 (1984), the Supreme Court held that associations may not exclude people for reasons unrelated to the group’s expression. However, in Hurley v. Irish-American Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Group of Boston, 515 U.S. 557 (1995), the Court ruled that a group may exclude people from membership if their presence would affect the group’s ability to advocate a particular point of view. Likewise, in Boy Scouts of America v. Dale, 530 U.S. 640 (2000), the Supreme Court ruled that a New Jersey law, which forced the Boy Scouts of America to admit an openly gay member, to be an unconstitutional abridgment of the Boy Scouts’ right to free association.

Still not clear?

The point of view we advocate is, in part, moral straightness. The foundation of the Boy Scout movement is firmly established on a 1910 understanding of morality, which arguably eschewed homosexuality as a qualified behavior under the banner of moral straightness.

“Well,” you say, “these are modern times. It’s not 1910 anymore. Things have changed, and we must change with them. Let us be more Progressive in our ideals of what makes up morality!”

That is your opinion. The First Amendment protects your view just as much as it does ours. The courts, as noted above, have already made this plain.

Here’s the problem. Implied in that statement is the premise that everyone who doesn’t agree with you should be forced to change. That is antithetical to the First Amendment. Such change by force does great violence to my freedom to speak, think, or write as I choose. It imposes a Thought Police mentality on every action and behavior and philosophy produced by the organization, from then on.

Scouts reaffirm the scout oath at the 2007 World Scout Jamborree (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

On the contrary, there is no implication in the Scout Oath that anyone outside of the organization is under any obligation to live the BSA’s definition of morally straight.  There is also not even a hint that anyone not subscribing to the BSA’s Scout Oath would be forced to join the organization.

There is no evil conspiracy in this. The fact that the committee is a secret one has no bearing whatsoever on the legitimacy of its decisions, nor on the organization. The BSA has chosen a military/democratic hybrid command structure and not a purely democratic structure for its hierarchy and governance. They can do that! It’s America!

Yet, scouting under the BSA’s bylaws is a completely voluntary oath and association! Those who no longer wish to associate in that way are free to leave the BSA and join or start another organization!

In fact, if you check the history of the Scout Oath (Promise) you will find that, under the non-binding bylaws of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM), the Boy Scouts counterpart to the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), the Oath has changed according to various combinations of age, nationality, culture, and belief. That’s not rigid at all! It’s quite accommodating, in fact. Therefore, isn’t it obvious that the door is wide open for anyone who wishes to may indeed create their own organization governed by their own points of view and ideals?

A “Gay Boy Scouts of America”? Sure! Why not? A “World Organization of the Gay Scout Movement”? Do it! Put your efforts into building your own sandbox and castle instead of telling people in another sandbox how to build their castle.

What about that is so hard to understand? I just don’t get it. Enlighten me, please.

Boy Scouts Reaffirm Right to Assemble Upheld by Supreme Court

History of the Boy Scouts of America

In 2000, gays tried to bully their way into the Boy Scouts of America, an organization with a primary oath that includes being morally straight. The oath of the BSA is no secret. Everyone who joins the BSA necessarily takes that oath. I guess the gay lobby doesn’t mind ignoring that part.

Here we are in 2012 and gays are still trying their best to infiltrate through “test case law” and sabotage one of the last organizations in the world to stand its ground against homosexuality in its ranks.

As I have said repeatedly, and will continue to assert in light of the Supreme Court ruling upholding the right of the people to assemble freely and privately, it is well within the rights of gay agitators to start their own organization to cater to their every whim and lust. If they want to start a Gay Boy Scouts of America or Rainbow Scouts of America, they are perfectly within their right to do so. I will say not one word against them so long as they don’t try to pass it off as the same organization as or on par with or sanctioned by the Boy Scouts of America.

However, it looks as if they aren’t really all that interested in a scouting organization per se. No, this is all about payback and infiltration and cultural imperialism. This time around, they’re no longer shy about their motives and way of operating from within to destroy an organization’s founding principles.

The announcement suggests that hurdles may be high for a couple of members of the national executive board — Ernst & Young CEO James Turley andAT&T CEO Randall Stephenson — who have recently indicated they would try to work from within to change the policy. Both of their companies have been commended by gay-rights groups for gay-friendly employment policies.

Stephenson is on track to become president of the Scouts’ national board in 2014, and will likely face [ED: and give in to] continued pressure from gay-rights groups to try to end the exclusion policy. Asked for comment on Tuesday about the Scouts’ decision to keep the policy, AT&T did not refer to Stephenson’s situation specifically: “We don’t agree with every policy of every organization we support, nor would we expect them to agree with us on everything,” the company said. “Our belief is that change at any organization must come from within to be successful and sustainable.”

There you have it, from the mouth of a plant from the gay “rights” lobby. If we can’t destroy from the outside, we’ll destroy from the inside.

I hereby call on the BSA to remove Turley and Stephenson from the national executive board. Stephenson, especially, is a Trojan Horse.

That is all.

Declare Food Independence! Grow an Apocalypse Garden.

So, the world has ended and you don’t know where you’ll get your next meal? This is one case where you’ll want to be ON the grid.

In preparation for this or next year’s global economic collapse, I built and grew this garden.

Apocalypse Garden: Not your grandfather's Victory garden, but it'll do in a pinch.

Apocalypse Garden: Not your grandfather’s Victory garden, but it’ll do in a pinch.

Grow your own food in a limited space

Grow (lots of) your own food in a limited space

I actually had a dream one night in February about doing this. Even though I can’t now recall the details, the feeling of the dream was of extreme urgency and it focused on planting and growing LOTS of food, both for my family and for charity.

In hindsight, it was good I had paid attention to my dream. The midwest, where I live, is in the grip of a brutal drought. Temperatures as I write this are expected to soar into the 103-105 degree range today, and even higher tomorrow. It hasn’t rained significantly for over a month now and there is still no rain in sight.

But I’m ok. This garden is thriving due to our mineral-rich, non-flouridated, non-chlorinated well water being sprinkled on it each evening. My corn stalks are twice the height of some of the “drought-resistant” farmer varieties I see today from the roadside.

Anyway, after the dream I had, I wondered how I would do this without having to remove turf (a task which I hate with a white hot hate). Research revealed that a square foot gardening approach, using raised beds made of wood, is the best way to avoid this pain (and a trip to the chiropractor).

After having put it all together, I can verify that square foot gardening is MUCH more preferable to digging up your lawn as with a traditional garden. You can just build and lay down wooden boxes, put newspaper in the bottom, then fill them up with the soil mixture of your choice. It also makes managing a garden a more tailored and specific approach than the row gardening we usually think of. That extra attention for each plant results in higher yields.

So, for the impatient (or for the Johnny-Come-Latelys trying to catch up), here’s how to build an Apocalypse Garden. Later in this article, I’ll talk about planning and cost.

You’ll need:

  • a piece of property with an area big enough to grow supplemental food for your entire family + charity (your own, or “borrowed” from a farmer or neighbor friend). With square foot gardening, it doesn’t have to be much property.
  • 8″ x 12′ lengths of cedar siding, with V-groove on two sides (cedar is rot/mildew resistant)
  • 2″ x 2″ x 8′ furring strips
  • 3/4″ deck screws
  • table saw or miter box with handsaw
  • chop saw, circular saw, or handsaw
  • cordless drill
  • band clamp
  • measuring tape
  • twine (for laying out grids)
  • staple gun (for stapling the twine to the boxes)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Measure your garden area. Be sure it’s in a spot where there is lots of sun all day long. Also call your local utilities to make sure it won’t conflict with any gas or power lines underground, just in case you do later decide to dig a garden rather than have a raised bed garden. It’s a good idea to “make the math easy” by measuring out in dimensions of even numbers divisible by 2. My garden measurement is 20′ by 44′. This gives me a 2′ buffer/barrier on all sides (for mulch or insect-repelling flowers), and a total of twenty-one, 4′x4′ boxes arranged in a grid so that there is exactly 2′ of space between them. The 2′ space between the boxes is wide enough for an average push lawn mower to get between them to cut the grass and is comfortable for using a weed trimmer to keep the grass from growing too high around the boxes. It’s also just wide enough to get in a comfortable kneeling or sitting position to tend to the grids.

  2. 4' lengths of v-groove cedar siding

4′ lengths of v-groove cedar siding

With the table saw or miter box set at a 45° bevel angle, cut four, 4 foot lengths of cedar siding, with the ends beveled “inward” (45° miter joint) so you can make a box.

To my math and woodworking-challenged brain, this was the hardest part. You have to get as close as you can to complementary 45° angles on each end’s cuts so that you get a perfect (or as near to perfect as you can get) 90° corner when the box is assembled. However, it’s worth it in the long run. Mitering the ends reduces waste. It also eliminates the problem of having to cut square ends, but making sure that the two “inner” boards are cut shorter than the two “outer” boards so that all the sides measure exactly 4′.

Reserve and mark with a pencil or pen the first of the cuts you make as a model for the rest, using it to measure out the other three from your lengths of siding. This is important for consistency of the first box you’re making which will be a model for the others you build on top of it.

If you make a mistake with the miter configuration on a board, set it aside for making 2′ x 2′ boxes later. Two by two boxes are good for “nesting” on top of soil already within a 4′ x 4′ box, or as standalones.

  3. Cut furring strip into 5" blocks, four to a box

Cut furring strip into 5″ blocks, four to a box

Cut four, 5″ lengths of furring strip lumber. These are for the inside corners.

You usually can’t find these 2″ x 2″ x 10′ lumber cuts in cedar (usually only pine), so they’re not as rot-resistant. Metal brackets like you use for decking would have been better, but they were too expensive.

Besides, if these rot, I can just replace them very cheaply. In hindsight, I might have dipped them in Thompson’s Water Seal or linseed oil to further resist rot, but some gardeners would hesitate to add these compounds to their wood for fear that they might leech into the soil and contaminate the crop.

  4. Band clamping the corners at 90 degree angles

Band clamping the corners at 90 degree angles

Setting the sides together in a box on the floor, with the “tongue” edge of the siding touching the floor, dry-assemble the box using the band clamp to hold all four sides together. The band clamp working against the mitered ends will have friction enough to hold the box together until you can screw the 5″ long furring strip blocks to the inside corners for permanent support.

  5. Place the furring strip blocks in each corner, sitting on the ground.Having them sitting on the ground, rather than trying to center them between the top and bottom edges of the board, ensures that the 5″ furring strip blocks are flush with the “tongue” edge of the box. This is important if you want ease of assembly when stacking boxes as your soil depth needs change. This way, you won’t have to clear dirt off the top of the block when you assemble more boxes on top.
  6. Drill pilot holes smaller than the diameter of the screws in the places where you will fasten the boards to the furring strip blocks. This will keep the cedar siding from splitting as you fasten everything together.
Use two 3/4" decking screws to secure each corner

Use two 3/4″ decking screws to secure each corner

Use two screws on each end (4 screws per side) for maximum strength. At the end of this process, you will have one, fully assembled garden box. Use this one as the “standard model” for building the others so all your boxes are uniform in dimensions and angles.

  7. Use the first side you cut and marked for the model box to measure and cut subsequent pieces of siding into 4′ lengths.
  8. Flip the model box over so that now the “groove” edge is touching the floor.
  9. Assemble the next box on top of the “model” box by inserting the grooves of the next four 4′ lengths into the tongues of the model box’s sides. Band clamp and gradually tighten the band clamp as you adjust this new box so that the corners are nice and square (90° angles). Cut and place more 5″ furring strip blocks in the corners, and screw it all together as with the first.
  10. Repeat steps above for creating box upon box until you have enough, or the “stack” gets too high to work on. Then separate the boxes (boxen?) by prying them apart with a screwdriver at the points where the ends of each level’s 5″ furring strip blocks meet.

Now, just take these puppies out, toss ‘em on the ground where you want to grow a garden, layer in some newspaper, and fill them up with rich, healthy soil. Plant and eat, my friend!

Planning

The planning process begins in the winter, well before you begin to plant, or even build your boxes. You need to figure out things like which vegetables will do well in your zone, which sizes of boxes to have, what your family eats (or will likely eat) the most, adding in nutritional needs, what you can likely barter, and what crops are likely to be “bumper” crops for charity or for bulk usage at home.

Again, it’s important to think of how you cook and what you eat to determine which mix of vegetables and fruits you’ll likely use. It makes no sense to grow, say, boxes and boxes of onions if nobody in your family likes them (unless that’s a good sale, barter or charity item in your area).

With a traditional garden you typically work with a homogeneous soil mixture in a large garden area consisting of rows of plants. The point of a square foot garden, of course, is to garden individual plants using 1′ x 1′ spaces to separate your plants according to their type, nutritive needs, and growing season.

Additional advantages of square foot gardening include easier weeding, more attention to detail for each plant or plant group growing in a grid space, flexibility about where you can plant food (especially in limited spaces), among other things.

For example, if I want to use, say, four of my 1×1 spaces in a box for a certain type of plant requiring a delicate balance of soil mixture, I can easily dig out just the squares in the grid where I need that soil, maybe put some cardboard, plastic, or wooden dividers in to create a barrier between the two soil types, and then introduce my custom mix just into those grids.

I sketched my layout on graph paper. Note that you’re not limited to the sizes and configuration I’ve presented above. You can lengthen your boxes as much as you want (strawberries do well in beds built to 12′ x 4′). The only limitation you’ll want to impose is no more than 4′ wide on a side. That will make it easy to reach in and tend your plants.

For pest control, you can paint the box sides with fox or coyote urine granules dissolved in water. This keeps away the rabbits (fox) and deer (coyote) and, as I found, has the added bonus of keeping Max, my tomcat, from using the boxes for nature’s call.

Also, lots of insects hate the smells of certain flowers such as marigolds. I haven’t done this yet, but you can use the outer buffer space to build a “wall” of insect-resistant flowers around your garden. It’s like a force field against bugs!

For seeds, I went online to ParkSeed.com and Gardeners.com, two of my favorite online gardening providers. They’re not the cheapest, but I was looking for more than my local “big box” gardening store could provide. I picked out varieties that I knew would do well in my growing zone and that my family would eat. I tried to avoid hybrids and “Big-Ag” seed brands and instead sought to buy heirloom seeds wherever possible. That way I could avoid GMO crops and “legally” (blech) preserve some seed for subsequent years’ crops so as to cut my costs even further as time goes on.

I used Word to build a simple table to represent the garden and typed letters of the alphabet in each box keyed to represent each plant. This combats the “what the heck did I plant there” and “is that a weed or is it food” problems I often encounter as the plants begin to germinate.

As a homeschooler, I also tried to get all scientific and began building a journal of data on each plant I planned to grow, and a log where I could record what was working well and what was not. I wanted to use it as a homeschool unit study. But a) my kids just aren’t as interested as I am in gardening, let alone all that data (unlike government schools, we don’t force subjects on our kids before they’re ready or interested) and b) it was starting to get in the way of the ultimate goal of actually planting the garden.

Cost

The method behind my madness was in looking towards and beyond a deep, global financial disaster like the one on our doorstep right now. Make no mistake, folks. Just as this garden isn’t your grandfather’s Victory Garden, this financial crisis is not your father’s recession, or even depression. NOBODY knows where this is going, nor how it will end, because NEVER in the history of the world has our society been so complex.

Gold flakes for breakfast again?!

Gold flakes for breakfast again?!

So you’ve invested in gold? You can’t eat gold, my friend. Though, maybe you’ll want to eat it when the bottom eventually falls out of that market and the food supply is dwindling. When the SHTF and TEOTWAWKI happens, there is going to be a big hurt put on developed nations. I shudder to think of what will happen to our brothers and sisters in developing nations. May God have mercy on all of our souls.

I wanted my project to be one that would be sustainable in the event that the Home Depots and the Lowes and the Menards of the local area suddenly ran out of inventory, or shut down altogether. Therefore, the design I came up with was as minimalistic and as modular as possible without sacrificing too much longevity of the final product. I didn’t want to have to repeat the major overhaul cycle very often, but I also didn’t want to spend a lot.

I lost track of specific costs in the middle of the build process, but my estimate for how much I’ve spent on what you see in the photos above is between $1,000 and $1,500. That’s for a fairly big garden capable of supplementing, or replacing if necessary, nutrition for 7 to 9 people. Not too many folks have that kind of money just lying around, and such means will be impossible for most when the end of the financial world comes (which is a good reason to build this NOW). However, you’d be surprised at how quickly even meager means can accumulate if you just do without some non-essentials for a few weeks or months. It’s definitely manageable.

If nothing else, consider this an investment rather than an unrecoverable expense. The first year’s yield will probably not pay for it, but subsequent year yields will.

Still not convinced? Just ask yourself how much you’d pay for any amount of food security in a crisis and you’ll have your Return-On-Investment calculation right there.

See Birth of a Square Foot Garden for an alternate method to the one I’m showing here. That way is more expensive and work-intensive than my method, but also builds in some great convenience features and looks much nicer. My way isn’t pretty but looks better than a row garden. It isn’t cheap, especially when compared to gouging out a chunk of ground, dumping in some dirt, and planting away. But, for those with limited space, bad soil, or bad backs, it is much more scalable and manageable for the money you’re spending than other square foot gardening container ideas I’ve seen. Seniors with walkers, canes, in electric scooters or even wheelchairs can manage a raised bed, square foot garden. Not so easy with row gardening.

I did already have one cost advantage going into this. In another area of my lot, also about 880 sqft, I had placed a traditional garden several years ago. At the time, before we knew the “lay of the land” of our new property purchase, it seemed like a great place. So, we bought several cubic yards of topsoil pre-fertilized with cow manure and hauled it from where it was dumped in the front yard all the way to the back. We planted all sorts of stuff and then sat back and waited for the bounty.

The garden was a flop. The problem ended up being that it didn’t get enough sunlight, what with our yard being in a depleted-and-converted gravel pit and backing up to the incline of said gravel pit, and trees on that hill blocking the afternoon sunlight. By about 2:00pm on hot June days, our plants were starved of direct sunlight, resulting in scrawny, pale plants that died before fruiting.

Fast forward several years, with multiple dumpings of grass clippings and compost on the “failed garden”, and “suddenly” we found ourselves with 12″ of premium, fertile black topsoil. I cannot say enough good about layered composting of grass clippings, folks. Forget the garden waste recycling brown bag kabuki theater your local Waste Management and government puts you through. Just pile that stuff in an unused corner of your yard and wait five years.  Add a container, worms and compost accelerator if you don’t want to wait that long. Either way, you won’t be shelling out hundreds of dollars for what I like to call “baggies of soil” at the garden center. You, like the independent American Patriot you are, will have made your own dirt. ;)

Planting

Once you’ve built all the boxes you need, get the area ready by mowing any grass as close as you can to the ground. I mean really crop it by setting your mower to its lowest setting. That will give you a head start on killing the lawn under your boxes so that you don’t grow more grass than lettuce.

Next, lay out your grid how you like it. I’m an OCD kind of guy, so all my garden boxes had to be in a perfect grid of 3 boxes by 7 boxes with 2′ of buffer space on each side of a box. But do it however you like. The only things that really matter are sufficient drainage under each box and ensuring that as the sun travels across the sky, the taller plants won’t cast a shadow over the smaller ones. For those of us in the northern hemisphere, that means placing taller plants to the North, shorter plants to the South.

Now, put down a couple of layers of newspaper as a blocking barrier for the grass underneath. It will choke out the grass there and eventually decompose. Besides, all that liberal B.S. “journalism” is cheaper than landscaping cloth and so is good for this at least, right? And, you’re helping the environment, so pat yourself on the back. Maybe. If that makes you feel good or something.

Fill each box with your topsoil mixture. You can go with Mel Bartholomew’s special mix, buy topsoil locally, or use your own compost. Mel’s Mix and his canonical square foot gardening methods (though more expensive) are really good for keeping weeds at bay. If you don’t mind some weeding (I find it mentally cleansing, character-building, and a good squatting exercise for leg muscles) topsoil or compost will do. Weeding is also a great chore bribe for when your kids want something and you want a little quid pro quo.

Like cereal in a box, the soil will settle after a bit, so be sure to have more soil on hand to top it off after the settling has occurred. Break up any clods to help speed this up and make your soil mixture and consistency more uniform. Add earthworms for aeration. If you’re doing the layered compost like I did, you should already have the worms step covered.  Follow any other great green thumb advice you prefer or that works for your area with regards to soil.

Of course, it’s not REAL square foot gardening unless you establish a grid. With your boxes laid out and filled, you’re ready to create the 1′ x 1′ grids on top of each box. Some people use thin furring strips cut to fit horizontally across the top of the box. Others, like me, use twine stretched and stapled to the edges of the box. The grid is there to help you place your plants neatly in the centers and to aid you in managing the soil requirements, watering, feeding, and care of heterogeneous plant groupings within a single box, so don’t skip this step.

Completed square foot garden boxes, filled with soil, and gridded.

Completed square foot garden boxes, filled with soil, and getting started with gridding.

Now you’re ready to start planting.  There’s a lot to be said for starting seedlings and transplanting. I’m not that kind of gardener…yet. It just takes too much effort for me to find a place in the house in February that the kids won’t disturb, gets enough sunlight, won’t be tempting as a litter box for the cat, etc. I just plant and pray after the first frost, like our grandparents used to do, and 9 times out of 10 I get a good result. I do have plans to convert an old aboveground pool deck into a greenhouse and chicken coop, but that’s a subject for a future post.

So, just stick those seeds in the individual grids according to the instructions. With square foot gardening you’ll want to modify what your typical Burpee-type seed packet says (Park Seed is remarkably square foot gardening friendly in all its labeling, though sometimes they skimp on the seed count).

Use the Square Foot Gardening Plant Spacing table, and common sense, as a key. For example, with carrots, I used the “four finger method” of sticking four of my fingers into the soil as far apart as I could stretch them. This placed depressions for receiving the seed at the optimal distance from each other across the 1′ span. Repeat three or four times to fill the 1′ x 1′ square, then do the same to all the other squares in the box.

But, don’t make the mistake I did. With square foot gardening and thick-growth seeds like carrots, you don’t need to plant every carrot seed in the packet. Just sow between one and three per spot in the grid and you avoid all the thinning later.

Now, for things like pole beans, peas, and other “climbing” or “trellising” plants, I lashed bamboo poles together with zip ties, tied nylon twine between the spaces, and created a structure for them to climb as they matured. This is the fun part because there are literally dozens of ways to do this per plant. Get creative and try different ideas.

For my potatoes (Yukon Gold variety), I’m simply stacking boxes using the tongue and groove of my cedar siding! To add more soil depth for my carrots (Scarlet Nantes), and corn (sweet, of course), I likewise stacked on another box and added more soil.

Political and Social Implications

Be aware that the Obama administration, which is in bed with Monsanto, is working hard to make sure that small farms and maybe even homegrown gardens cannot be used for capitalistic ends. Therefore, if you intend to sell fresh produce or capture seeds from your garden, be prepared for the eventuality that bills-to-become-laws like SB.510, the “food safety” bill, will go down the slippery slope these types of laws tend to go down and brand you a criminal for doing so. [sarcasm] Don’t be surprised if that bill passes with a clause that all produce growers must pray to Monsanto when saying grace over the food. [/sarcasm]

But things We the People are losing the ability to control aside, if you are physically able, it is up to YOU to maintain your dignity and freedom. Take care of YOURSELF and YOUR OWN FAMILY, no matter what the government is telling you it will do for you. The guaranteed outcomes they promise simply can’t be counted on, nor are they worth the cost. YOU are the master of your destiny and the captain of your soul. Don’t fall for the rhetoric that the “smart guys” in Washington D.C. will take care of you in a crisis. They won’t.

Listen to centuries of conventional wisdom and learn to care for yourself and your neighbors through being charitable. Apply what you’ve learned about gardening to helping others through neighborhood or community garden systems. There’s nothing like being the community expert on growing or providing food to buy you “protection” from hoodlums or mafiosos trying to take advantage of a dire situation. Also, charity, the pure love of Christ, is disarming to anyone marching into your house and demanding your food.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Feed the hungry, clothe the naked. You will be blessed for doing so.

Humor: UK security threat levels raised from “Miffed to “Peeved”

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent events in Syria and have therefore raised their security level from “Miffed” to  “Peeved.”

Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to “Irritated” or even “A Bit Cross.” The English have not been “A Bit Cross” since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from “Tiresome” to “A Bloody Nuisance.” The last time the British issued a “Bloody Nuisance” warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from “Pissed Off” to “Let’s get the Bastards.”  They don’t have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France’s white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country’s military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from “Shout Loudly and Excitedly” to “Elaborate Military Posturing.” Two more levels remain: “Ineffective Combat Operations” and “Change Sides.”

The Germans have increased their alert state from “Disdainful Arrogance” to “Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs.” They also have two higher levels:  “Invade a Neighbor” and “Lose.”

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really  good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from “No worries” to “She’ll be alright, Mate.” Two more escalation levels remain: “Crikey! I think we’ll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!” and “The barbie is cancelled.” So far no situation has ever warranted use of the last final escalation level.

A final thought – “Greece is collapsing, the Iranians are getting aggressive, and Rome is in disarray. Welcome back to 430 BC”…

Is the American Psyche a Neurotic Mess?

No. The price of freedom is vigilance.

If we have to single out some individuals based on a profile that fits the description of the primary perpetrator, that is radical Islam, then that is what we must do.

It is no longer true that we have the best healthcare, the best education, and the best freedoms in the world.  The statistics are quite clear on these points.

Really? We don’t have the best healthcare? Excuse my “neurosis”, but exactly what “statistics” are being used to make this claim?

Our Chief-Story-Teller is claiming the US economy has improved since his inauguration. I wonder from which fortune cookie he pulled that nonsense. Then in June, he said: “the private sector is doing fine.” Sooner or later, OBama needs to hone in on the truth or get better at lying. Zen is not easy. It takes effort to attain…
